Interest Rates Remain Crazy Low

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. long-term mortgage rates held steady this week amid mixed signs in the housing market. Rates remain at historically low levels as a lure to prospective homebuyers.

Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday that the average rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage was unchanged from the previous week at 3.68%. The benchmark rate stood at 4.75% a year ago.

The average rate on a 15-year mortgage ticked down to 3.14% this week from 3.15% last week.

Washington is #1 – We Already Knew That!

A study released by governing.com earlier this year found that people are moving to Washington state at such a rate that a number of counties actually have fewer native Washingtonians than adults who born elsewhere and moved to the Evergreen State.

Whatcom County is one of those, the study said, with only 40.5% of its residents actually born in Washington. Pierce (39.9%) and Thurston (37.6%) counties also have more transplants from other states.

An annual Best States ranking published recently by U.S. News and World Report may lend some insight into exactly why — turns out Washington isn’t just good, it’s the best.

The real action in home prices lately isn’t in King County, where price growth has stabilized.

Even in Pierce County, where homebuyers scalded by high prices in King County continue to snap up less expensive properties, price growth is slowing.

No, the fastest price growth in Western Washington is in Thurston, Kitsap and Whatcom Counties — home to Olympia, Bremerton and Bellingham, respectively — where the King County spillover is heating up other midsize metropolitan centers in the Puget Sound region.

In May, Tacoma was crowned the hottest housing market in the country. (That’s in contrast to King County, where prices are inching along.)
